YAKUTAT SURF PHOTO PUBLISHED IN "50 PLACES TO SURF BEFORE YOU DIE"

A couple of months ago I got a phone call from Jack Endicott the owner of the one and only surf shop in Yakutat, Alaska, “Icy Waves”. He told me that he had been asked to write a recommendation to be featured in a book about amazing places to surf around the globe and that the author, Chris Santella was looking for some photos of some frosty waves. Having traveled to that beautiful coast on a number of surf strike missions over the past three years I had quite a collection to share .

He ended up choosing a photograph of Josh Mulcoy, an amazing surfer and avid world traveler, framed perfectly behind the Mount Saint Elias Mountains and I couldn’t have been more stoked. This day in particular was memorable for not only the exceptional long period swell, bringing long lefts into the bay, but the sun was out and for a change there was actually a “crowd” of surfers sharing the waves together.

Usually my buddy Dylan and I, and occasional a local or two, are the only ones out there braving the elements, often times with rain, snow, or at least some overcast skies. But on this day, aside from the gigantic snow covered peaks, it felt like we were in California circa 1970 or something. At any given time there were 5-10 people in the water spread out along the point and for once the “crowd” was a much welcome addition to the day.

Here are a few more moments from that day.

Enjoy,

Ryan
